Government of New Brunswick

Heritage Fair Program

The New Brunswick’s Heritage Fair Program is a provincial initiative of the Archaeology and Heritage Branch of the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture to celebrate and promote the diversity of New Brunswick and Canadian cultural and natural heritage through research.

Heritage Fairs are also supported by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, the Department of Intergovernmental Affairs, the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, the New Brunswick Museum, the Council of Archives New Brunswick, the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, the New Brunswick Federation of Labour and the University of New Brunswick (Faculty of Education).

The Heritage Fair is a competition where students (grades 5 to 9) are encouraged to explore their heritage by choosing a subject of interest relating to heritage and conducting research using a variety of sources. The best-researched and most well-presented projects will pass to the regional level.

  • The fairs may be undertaken by an entire school, a class, in small groups or individually.
  • The fairs may take place in the classroom, in the school, in the community or in another setting.
  • The fairs happen during the school year between mid-February and mid-April.

An Invitation to Teachers

Heritage Fairs are an opportunity to include your entire school in an educational, dynamic and exciting event! By participating in the program, teachers from all departments (social studies, history, language arts, core language and immersion, science and technology, natural sciences, math, sport and recreation, multimedia, art music, enrichment, etc.) encourage their students to learn more about their community and their society while developing and expressing their creative talents. By putting together an interdisciplinary program in your school, your students will be proud to participate in your school’s own unique Heritage Fair.

Help us give the opportunity to more and more students to participate in a Heritage Fair. This starts by holding a fair in your school, and the best projects will join the Regional Fair in your district in May.
